The school was founded as the very first step towards “Maarif (Education, abbreviation of Ministry of Education) College System” in 1955, thus, was first named Kadikoy Maarif College.  Founding Principal Macit Kiliceri ensured prominent position of Kadikoy Anadolu Lisesi in National Education System of Turkey whilst it was being reshaped. Ergo, school adopted a three year-full English curricilum along with 2 years of preparatory class. This was the very first time a Turkish public school adopted such an innovative curriculum, indeed, this was the very purpose of the foundation of school.

Under the Maarif College System, the school adopted a unique educational program, along with other four  high schools located all around Turkey. Kadıkoy Maarif College was founded as an attempt to nationalize education and provide the same standards of highly qualified private schools, as French, Italian and American high schools were popularizing and a big majority of Turkish high schools were using rather outdated and unqualified techniques, hence, were inadaquate to serve for young Republic’s future.

“As cultural and economic contacts between our State and nations of world increase exponentially day by day, the emergent need of raising a new generation of youngster which learns major world languages and gets the best use of scientific researches in a broder scope has become an inevitable requirement for economic and technical studies developing and escalating faster than ever.” Grand National Assembly of Republic of Turkey, Yearly Statement, 1955, 5.

As it was first established, majority of Kadikoy Maarif College teachers were of Anglosaxaphonian and American origin, teaching scientific classes, mathematics, literature and social studies in English. Turkish, history and physical education were the only classes taught in Turkish. First students of the school were all boarding boys. Starting from 1964-65 education year, the school started to accept both boy and girl day students as well.

Kadıköy Maarif College’s success was undeniable when the Ministry of Education once again decided to reshape the national education system in 1975. Maarif College system was renamed as Anadolu Lisesi (Anatolian College) and the Ministry decided to expand the number of schools following the same curriculum as of Kadikoy Anadolu Lisesi. Today, majority of high schools in Turkey are Anatolian Colleges, yet withstanding with its academic success, social and cultural atmosphere, Kadikoy Anadolu Lisesi remains at the top of Turkish educational society.

Premises of school was originally historic buildings used by Franciscan Capuchin Order, a Christian order. In 1968 a second building was added to the school which served as an additional dormitory. In 1976 and 1977 two more buildings were added. For many years it was ranked as the biggest high school in the Balkans.

Since the foundation of Kadikoy Maarif College, it has been educating all seagulls who are highly qualified as much as the education level in English. On the other hand, Kadikoy Maarif College has provided a successful atmosphere for cultural and social developments of seagulls. In 1993 the school was selected to have a special status with two other important Anatolian Colleges in Turkey. By this status, the school was able to give  its students a 2 years long preparatory class. In 2004, the school was nominated for the “National Quality of Success Award” and became the first school to win it.

Since 1955, Kadikoy Anadolu Lisesi has had its own traditions in not only its curriculum of education but also society. After the procedure of Turkish High Schools changed and compolsury high school education year was extended to 4 years from 3 years, it has continued its education with 1 prep year and 4 years of high school classes. With 350 boarding, 900 day students and 15.000 graduates who are still a part of the school’s family and deserve the name of “seagulls”, it has been making the difference with not only its success in national university exams but also its quality in English education and being a major part of today’s society.
